Career Options

In years past, the question of "What can you do with an English major?" had a very short answer: teach.  That answer is still true, but there are now many, many other answers as well. 

The Department of English takes an active interest in developing an awareness of career options among its majors.  All majors are required to take English Orientation, which includes extensive discussion of career options.  In the English Capstone course (also required) students again look at career options as they review the course of their studies.

Once each semester the department hosts a Career Panel, where one or more successful alumni are invited to campus to talk with students about their life experiences after graduation.We have hosted executives, teachers, writers, and professionals in a wide range of fields. We are also gathering in-depth data about just where our students go when they graduate.  We encourage you to review the results on this ongoing survey, available by clicking the Career Survey Results tab on the right. Finally, the department maintains an extensive and very successful Internship Program.  All English majors are encouraged to gain practical experience in using their writing, editing, research, and oral communication skills in a real world setting.  For further information about the Internship Program, click the Internship tab on the upper lefthand side of this page.
